Script lettering and small creature on lower back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is large black script lettering reading Semen Demon, running across the lower back above the waistband of jeans. Between the two words sits a small grey illustration of a rounded creature or figure with small bubble-like shapes above it. The work is in black ink with grey shading, and the photograph shows a single body area with no other colour.

The engine had coughed twice before Skipper Dessie Quarrie admitted the trouble was in the forward hold, and that the trouble had a name, and the name was Grizzle. Grizzle was a small grey imp no taller than a herring box, with a round head like a bilge float and a habit of blowing soap bubbles from its mouth whenever anyone swore at it. Nobody had invited it aboard. It had simply been there when the Morning Thrift came back from her first trip after the new hull was fitted, sitting cross-legged on the bait ice, looking pleased with itself.

The crew tried everything. Mags the cook offered it bread crusts, and it ate the tin they came in. Young Tam Greig read it the shipping forecast under his breath, which it seemed to enjoy, though it blew a shower of bubbles over the chart table and the bubbles stayed there, floating at head height and popping only when someone said sorry. By the third week the wheelhouse smelled of pennies, and the nets came up full of nothing but lemon-coloured jellyfish.
It was Mags who finally struck the bargain. She stood at the rail at dawn, cold tea in one hand, and told the grey thing plainly that it could stay if it caught them something worth the keep. It considered this for a long while, bubbles rising from it like a slow kettle. Then it climbed down the net drum, put one small hand into the black water, and drew it back holding a single lobster, blue-shelled and furious, which it presented to Tam with great dignity.
The skipper still swears the thing has never been seen since, though Mags leaves a crust on the rail every morning, and most mornings there are a few bubbles drifting over the harbour wall, catching the sun for a moment before they go.
