Diamond and star tattoos on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a woman in a white dress with raised dot detail and a bow at the waist. On her upper arm are small solid black and grey tattoos of a star shape and a diamond, with another small mark below, while a faint winged figure sits near the top of her back. The shallow focus and soft, warm light keep the emphasis on the dress, with the tattoos at the edge of the frame.

The reunion was held in the old schoolhouse at Hollin Edge, the winter the beck froze solid for six weeks. Nobody had seen Marjorie Vane since she left at fifteen with a cardboard suitcase and a promise to the vicar's wife that she would never come back. Yet there she was in the doorway, in a white frock sprinkled with raised dots like frost on a gate, a satin bow knotted at the waist.

Miss Teague, who had taught them all their letters, kept a tin in her desk drawer. Inside were the things children had handed her for safe keeping over forty years: a brass button, a star cut from tin, a diamond of glass from a broken lantern, and a paper angel with one wing torn. Each had a name written on the base. Marjorie's name was on the angel. Miss Teague had never once opened the tin in front of anyone.
Marjorie asked for it. "I left these with you so I wouldn't have to carry them," she said. "I'll take back only what I need." She took the star and the diamond, pinned them to the bow at her waist, and left the angel on the desk for the quiet girl at the back who had a torn paper wing of her own.
Miss Teague closed the tin. Outside the beck was still frozen, and as Marjorie walked down the lane into the snow, the dots on her frock caught the lamplight the way sugar catches on a cake.
