Colourful botanical bouquet tattoo of roses, purple blooms and bluebells on the upper arm of a woman in a white lace top.

Floral bouquet tattoo on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A round bouquet of roses, purple flowers, pink blooms and blue bluebells sits on the outer upper arm, with green leaves and stems. The shading is soft and painterly, with smooth gradients in the petals and fine detail in the smaller flowers. The bright palette stands out against the pale skin and the white lace of the top, and the photo is cropped at the shoulder and neck.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed merchant's widow at Hollin Cross had one rule for the spring fair: no bunch of flowers was sold until it had been tied in the old way, roses at the heart, the purple lilies pressed in beside them, bluebells hung down the outside like bells that would not ring. Her son Tobias thought the rule foolish and said so every April, and every April he tied the bunches anyway because his mother's hands were too stiff for the knots.

The year the frost came late, he sold forty bunches before noon. A carter's girl bought one for her mother's grave, a young clerk bought one for the window of a lodging house he could not afford, and an old man with a bad leg bought the last, a round bundle of pink primroses and red roses with the bluebells dipped in the water to keep them bright. He paid in coppers and asked Tobias to tie the ribbon tighter, because the wind on the road was cruel.

That evening the widow counted the coins and found one copper too many in the tin. She sent Tobias back up the road with a lantern, and he found the old man sitting on a milestone, the bouquet across his knees, weeping quietly over the bluebells. Tobias did not ask why. He only held the lantern steady and said the flowers would last a week if the water was changed each morning.

The old man nodded and tucked the copper back into Tobias's palm. "Tie them the way your mother does," he said. "Roses at the heart. Someone always comes back for the bells."
