Diamond, ghost and lettering tattoos on a hand
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A close view of the back of a hand and wrist, with a teal-shaded diamond at the centre and a small outlined ghost and four-point star nearby. The words YOUR THROAT HERE are written in black block lettering across the knuckles, with a small heart at each end. Further up the forearm sit more tattooed cartoon figures and sparkles, partly cropped by the frame against a green garden background.

The ghost came back to the counter at ten past five, the way it always did once the till was half counted, and settled on a tray of unclaimed wedding rings as if it had paid for the seat. Mrs Ferriby had pledged a teal diamond on the Tuesday and not come back for it, and the ghost had decided, somewhere between the Tuesday and the Wednesday, that the stone was rightfully its own.

"It's paste," I said. "Look at the bubbles in it."
"I don't need to look," said the ghost. "I knew that ring when it was a brooch on my mother's coat. Paste is what people buy when they can't afford to lose anything." It drifted nearer the glass, pale and outlined, a four-pointed star winking above its head like a fault in the light. "You'll write me a ticket. Sixty pounds, and I'll take it in cash, which you'll have to fetch from the bank because I can't hold it."
I had a biro and no paper to hand, so I wrote the ticket number along my knuckles in block capitals, and under it, because it had been that sort of afternoon, the words the ghost always said when it was thinking: YOUR THROAT HERE. It had never explained them. It only said that a person ought to know where they were going to be taken.
Mrs Ferriby came in at six with a bus pass and no receipt. I showed her my hand. She laughed until she had to sit down on the bench by the door, and the ghost slid the diamond across the counter towards her with one transparent finger. She said it was too small and too blue. The ghost said the real one had gone in 1987 to a man with a better line in lies, and that she should keep the paste and save the bus fare for something worth the trip.
