Curved script tattoo with arrow on shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a shoulder and upper back showing a single curved line of angular, script-like black glyphs that ends in a downward-pointing arrow. The linework is solid and even, with no shading, and the skin tone and surrounding detail are natural. The composition is cropped tightly so the tattoo runs diagonally across the frame, with a grey top visible at the left edge.

Dear Nan,

The flour came early again, so I've been up since three with the shutters still down and the ovens ticking as they warm. Mr Okonedo from the corner shop was waiting on the step with his cart before I'd got the first tray out, and he wanted to know why the cob loaves were smaller this week. I told him the weather was damp. It isn't damp. I'm just not as careful as you were with the scale.
I found your recipe book in the drawer under the proving cloths. The ordinary words are in your slanted hand, but the bits you didn't want anyone reading are in that spiky writing you invented when we were girls, all hooks and points. I spent an hour with a pencil and the back of a bread bag working it out. Half of it is only "knead till the thumb stops sticking." The other half is the starter feeding schedule, which you always said was nobody's business but the yeast's.
The last line on the card is the one I keep coming back to. It curls across the bottom and ends in a little arrow pointing down, straight at the blank space underneath. I thought at first it was a mistake. Now I think you were telling whoever read it to put the next loaf on the bottom shelf, the left side, where it always burned.
Oh, and the dough's rising. I'll stop talking and go and see.
Love, Pat
