Disney characters forming a fairy on a back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A large tattoo covers most of the upper back and forms a winged fairy silhouette made from cartoon characters, including a fawn, an elephant, a wooden puppet and a rabbit. The characters are shaded in grey with soft highlights, and the wings and background use teal, pink and orange. A sparkling wand and small stars sit on the right side, with faint grey smoke shading around the figure.

The projector at the Vesta picture house in Hull had been running the same reel since 1958, and Ada Brindle knew every scratch on it. On the night the splice gave way, the screen went white for a moment, then filled with the wrong things: a fawn standing in a meadow that was not on any film she had threaded, a grey elephant tucked against a wooden boy's shoulder, and a rabbit tapping his foot as if he owned the aisle.

They did not stay on the screen. Ada swore afterwards that they climbed out of the light the way damp climbs a wall, slowly and then all at once. By the time she had her hand on the lever, they had knotted themselves into a shape with wings. The fawn made the left one, all soft brown hooves and sprouting leaves. The little elephant made the body, ears spread like sails, and the rabbit kicked out a leg to fill the gap by the hip.
The fairy hung above the empty rows. She had no wand, only the wooden boy's hand, which stretched out and gave her a stick of sparks pulled from the broken lamp housing. "You've been running us too fast," it said, in a voice like a cricket in a drawer. "Every night you drop the frame, and we miss our cues."
Ada slowed the reel to the speed her father had used, and the fairy loosened back into a tangle of cels and drifted down into the film can, where it has stayed ever since. On quiet evenings, when the lamp warms, she can still see a faint grey smoke curl up from the gate, and a few sparks catch in the corner of the screen before the feature starts.
