Bird of musical notes and treble clef on back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A bird is formed from musical notes, with a large treble clef making up its body and head. Its wings and tail trail into loose strands of blue shading and scattered black notes. The piece is mostly blue with black linework and soft grey shading, set against a light skin tone on the upper back.

Mind the step, the boards are wet, and I'll not tell this twice, so you'll listen the first time. That was the spring the herring came in so thick the nets sang. Not a figure of speech, mind. Ask old Jory Penhallow, if he's still above ground. The nets hummed when they were hauled, a low note that set your teeth going, and every boat in Porthkerris swore the sea itself wanted a tune.

Ada Trelawney kept the bait shed by the slipway. She had a fiddle her father carved from a piece of wrecked masthead, and she played it at dusk to call the gulls down off the roofs. One evening a blue bird came in off the bay, though it was too late in the year for birds like that, and it sat on the fiddle's scroll and would not leave. Its wings were the colour of the water under the quay, and where the feathers ended they broke into little black quavers that fell and rolled across the stones like spilt shot.
Ada tried to shoo it off. It sang back at her. Not a bird's call, but a proper tune, the one her mother had hummed over the mending. When Ada stopped, the bird stopped, and the notes on its breast began to rearrange themselves into a round, deliberate curl, as if it were signing its name.
She set the fiddle down and kept her hands still. The bird sang until the tide turned and the boats came in heavy, and nobody in Porthkerris caught a single fish that week. Nobody minded. The harbour had a song to listen to.
