Diving bird flash design
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A bird is shown diving head first with its wings swept upward and back, drawn as a solid black silhouette. The feathers are rendered with bold black fills, white highlights and grey shading along the wing edges, with a small yellow eye on the head. The bird sits centrally on a pale, slightly vignetted grey-green background.

You arrive at Saint Ebba's in March with a cracked slate and a letter from your mother. The porter takes the letter but not the slate. The brothers rise before the bell and walk the cloister in silence, and for the first week you count the silences instead of the psalms. Brother Anselm, who keeps the dovecote and the bees, tells you there is only one thing worth watching in the whole sky: a bird that has decided to fall.

He takes you up the tower stair on the ninth day, past the bell with its bronze lip gone green, and shows you the ledge where the swifts nest. A single bird comes over the fen low and fast, then folds its wings back along its body and drops head first past the parapet, straight down into the reeds. You forget to breathe. Anselm says it has seen a moth in the grass and wants it more than it wants to live. He says this as if it were a sermon, and you suspect it might be.
You go down to the reeds that evening, though compline has already rung and the abbot will notice. The bird is there in the mud, wings sprung upward as if caught mid-prayer, one yellow eye open and quite calm. You kneel and do not touch it. A moth lifts from the grass beside it and wavers over the black water.
At dawn you climb the tower again. The ledge is empty except for a single grey feather lying the right way up, and far below, the reeds are moving where something has taken off.
