Swallow in flight with musical notes

Black and grey · Flash

A stylised swallow flies to the right, with a treble clef and several music notes forming part of its tail, wing and body. The linework is fine and the feathers are built up with soft grey shading and darker accents. The bird is drawn in black and grey on a cream background, with the design filling most of the square frame.

The swallows came back to Porthmellin the same week the pilchards did, and my grandfather said that was how you knew the sea had finished sulking. He was a fiddler on the Dolphin, a boat that carried slate across the bay until the quay wall gave way, and he kept his bow in a tobacco tin so the damp wouldn't get at the horsehair.

The summer I was eleven he taught me the treble clef by drawing it in the wet sand under the harbour steps. 'Every bird's a note if you look at it sideways,' he said, and then he whistled a tune I'd never heard, four notes falling like a dropped coin. A swallow landed on the bollard beside us, its tail forked like a pair of shears, and he said that one was the one he'd been waiting on.

The Dolphin went down in February with nobody aboard, her mooring rope cut clean through, and the harbour master never found a reason. The fiddle didn't go down with her. I had it in my lap that night with the tin open, and the bow was bone dry, which made no sense at all in a gale.

In April the swallows returned to the eaves of the chandlery, and I climbed the ladder with his bow and played the falling four notes for the first time. One bird dropped off the gutter, banked past my ear and skimmed the water, and I swear it was writing on the air as it went.
