Don't blink lettering on the upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the words don't blink tattooed in black ink across the upper chest, just below the collarbone. The lettering uses a clean, typewriter-style serif font with solid, even linework and no shading. The skin is pale and the composition is tightly cropped, with a grey and white top and a sliver of reddish hair visible at the top of the frame.

Sit down on the landing, the lot of you, and stop kicking that bin. I'm telling this once. Eleven floors up in Calder House there was a man called Stanley Voss who kept the night window in the lift lobby, the one with the cracked pane that looked straight down on the car park. Every evening he carried a flask and an old typewriter up from the council offices, and every night the same two words came clacking out of it, one line after another. Don't blink.

Why? Because of the boy who ran into the road on Mill Lane the summer the fog came off the canal. Stanley swore he saw it in the glass a full second before it happened, and that was the trouble with him. Whoever looked away at the wrong moment got a glimpse of what he'd seen. So he kept his eyes open over the whole estate, and the estate slept sound because of it. Nobody thanked him. Nobody ever does for a thing that doesn't happen.
Then one February he didn't come up with the flask. The lobby light buzzed, the typewriter sat on its tin table with a sheet still rolled in it, and the car park went on with its orange lamps. Mrs Kettle from flat forty found the paper first. It said the usual words, and under them, in his square careful capitals, it said YOUR TURN, LOVE.
So that's why the lift doors close the way they do, and why I want you all looking at the lamps and not your phones. Go on, then. Blink. Somebody has to, sooner or later.
