"don't blink" lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows the words "don't blink" in black, typewriter-style lowercase lettering on the inner forearm below the wrist. The ink is crisp and even with a clean, uniform stroke, and the letters run horizontally across the skin. The blurred background of a dim room with posters and shelves keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Sit yourselves down, the lot of you, and mind the coil of rope. You'll want to know why the lookout on the Marigold was told never to blink, because the skipper's nephew laughed at the rule and it near cost us the boat.

It was the back end of the herring season, fog so thick you couldn't see the bow from the wheelhouse. Tam Reilly was up the mast with a paraffin lamp and a cold pie, and Ada Frew called up the speaking tube: "Don't blink, Tam. The shoal shows only as a shiver on the water, and a shiver is gone before a man can lift his lids." Tam said he'd not blinked since the Coronation and he'd not start for a bit of mist.
He saw it, mind. Somewhere off the starboard quarter the sea went smooth as cream for the length of a breath, a silver shiver spreading out like ink in milk. His eyes were streaming from the damp and he blinked, just the once. When he looked again there was nothing but grey, and the swell was slapping the hull where the nets should have been set.
Ada never said a word about it. She only nailed a board above the wheelhouse door with the rule painted on it, in the lettering from her late husband's typewriter, lower case and plain. So when you're on lookout and your eyes start to sting, you'll hear it in your head: don't blink. And if you do, be quick about it.
