The boat was late, so the rings were cooling by the time Mairi reached the pier on Holm Beag. She carried the box against her chest like a hymnbook, the pink icing already tacky under a sheet of waxed paper. Gulls walked the rail as if they had paid for the seats.

Her uncle ran the only bakery on the island, a whitewashed room with one oven and a radio that found Stornoway only after dark. He had taught her to glaze without dripping and to scatter sprinkles from the height of a hand, so the colours fell even. Today he stood at the window watching the bay, where the tide had pulled back and left a ring of wet sand stippled with shells.

"Put them on the sill," he said. "Then go and look at the tide. You'll not be back on the next boat, the way the wind's sitting."

She did as she was told. The sun came through the glass and lit the sprinkles, blue and yellow and a green like new bracken. Beyond the sill the rocks fanned out in black-edged shadow where the weed hung over, and the bay had made a flower of itself: pale sand petals, dark pools at the rim, and a hole in the middle where the sea had not yet come back. She pressed her thumb to the window and watched the water begin to turn.
