Compass and roses tattoo design sketch

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A hand-drawn sketch shows a compass rose inside a beaded ring, with three pink-shaded roses arranged around it and dotted lines extending to the sides. The linework is fine and graphic, with soft shading on the petals and the compass needles. Pink tints on the roses contrast with grey pencil lines on white paper, and two pens rest at the upper left and right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The needle on the old brass compass had stopped pointing at anything we could name by the third winter out of Harrow Deep. Mother kept it in a drawer lined with felt, and I was the only one allowed to take it out, because I was the only one who had ever bothered to learn the marks on its face.

The roses were Ada's idea. She ran the hydroponic bay along the spine of the ship, where the light came through a strip of sodium glass, and she grew three bushes bred on Earth for a scent nobody aboard remembered. Every ninth day she cut one and pressed it between the pages of the logbook, so the ship's record would hold something that did not need a battery to keep it.

On the night the bridge clock slipped a full hour, I sat at the chart table and tapped the glass. The needle swung, hesitated, and settled on the star cluster I had sketched in the margin beside a pressed rose, a drawing I made at nine with dotted lines running out from it like a route nobody had walked. I had drawn it as a joke. Ada had looked at it and said it was not a joke, it was a plan.

I set our course by it. The beads of the old ring rattled against the case whenever we turned, and somewhere under the deck the roses kept opening, unhurried, whichever way the ship was facing.
