The forearm on the left carries small, single-line doodles of a coffee cup, a paper plane, a pocket watch and the word oops, plus a larger rope-like shape in shaded grey. A thin band around the right wrist includes a black spade and a small touch of red.

The tea urn in St Aldhelm's hall had two settings, boiling and cold, and by half past three on the wedding day I had been both. I'm Dot Pemberton and I have poured tea at every wedding in Thornbury since the millennium, so I know the look of a best man who has lost his speech before the sausage rolls are out.

Terry Bell had written his on a stack of paper napkins with a chewed biro. He doodled in the margins the way other men tap their feet: a steaming cup, a pocket watch with the hands at twenty to, a paper plane banking off the edge of the page, the word oops beside a loop of rope. Gareth had asked him to keep it short. Terry had kept it to eleven napkins, which is short if you are generous about napkins.

He stood up, cleared his throat, and the fire door behind him swung open on a gust from the car park. The napkins went up like startled pigeons. One of them, folded into a plane, sailed the whole length of the hall and came down in the bride's lap. Lou unfolded it while the room waited. It was a pocket watch with a gold ring drawn tucked inside the case, and under it, in Terry's careful capitals, OOPS.

Gareth went the colour of the tablecloths. He had hidden the rings in his grandad's watch on the drive over, meaning to be clever, and had clean forgotten where he'd put them. Lou laughed so hard she had to hold the table. Terry picked up the rest of his napkins off the floor, and I refilled the urn, which was the only useful thing anyone did that afternoon. They found the rings in the car park, where the best things at weddings always seem to turn up.
