Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Hands are clasped together in a seated pose, with a small solid black cross tattooed on the back of one hand. The cross has simple, clean linework and is filled in black with no visible shading. The image is a close crop in warm, neutral tones, with a gold wristwatch, a black sweater, a leopard print top and ripped black jeans visible around the hands.

Tom found the watch in the potting shed eleven days after Mrs Penhale died, still ticking, still set to the wrong time. He held it up to the window and the light ran gold across the face. Nobody had wound it since the spring, yet it had kept going anyway, the way things do when no one thinks to stop them.

The allotment behind the Methodist hall had been hers for thirty-one years. Tom had inherited the key, two rows of leeks, a blackcurrant bush that fruited out of spite, and a small black iron cross she had bought from a man at a car boot sale in 1989 to mark the grave of a dog nobody in the family would name. It stood in the corner by the water butt with rust flaking from its arms. He had always assumed it was for the dog.
On the twelfth day he dug beneath it and found a biscuit tin. Inside were seed packets dated in her looping hand, and a letter addressed to whoever came after. The leeks were a lie, she wrote, grown only to annoy the Hendersons. The watch had been his grandfather's, and he should have had it fifty years ago. The blackcurrants would fruit if he left them alone.
Tom wound the watch until the crown stiffened under his thumb. He set it by the church clock across the road, pressed the iron cross back into the soil so it stood upright, and went home to look for a decent pair of gloves.
