Dotwork lotus mandala with dotted moons on chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical lotus mandala sits centrally on the chest, with a pointed flower head above layered petals. Fine outlines are filled with stippled dots that build soft shading from dense to sparse. Three dotted crescent moons are arranged around and below the petals, and the whole design is in black ink on pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You take the last crescent moon from the tray before the rain can smear the chalk on the stall numbers, and you turn it over in your palm like a coin nobody has accepted in years. The market under the railway arches is emptying. Tarpaulins sag with water. Somewhere a radio is still playing a dance tune to nobody, and the gutters carry paper lanterns towards the drain.

Your grandmother's brass stencil sits in its felt case beside the till. She cut the lotus into card in 1961, petal by petal, and taught you to load a dotting pen before you could read the price tags. She said a mandala was a map that had forgotten where it wanted to go, so you should always start from the centre and let the dots thin out towards the edge, where the world stops being certain.

A man in a yellow cagoule ducks under the arch, shaking water from his hood, and asks whether the moons come in pairs. You tell him they come in threes if he is patient. He buys nothing, but he stands for a long while looking at the pointed bud at the top of the flower, where the petals meet, and says it looks like something trying to open in the wrong season. You don't argue. You fold the last print into tissue, wrap the stencil, and pull down the shutter while the rain drums on the metal like a hundred fingertips making small, patient marks.
