Black lace-style floral tattoo on the back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large floral design made of lace-like patterns in black ink, with a rosette at the upper right, scrolling stems, pointed leaves and a heart-shaped motif. The linework is bold with fine cross-hatched infill, giving a textured, lace-like effect. The design is in black ink only and sprawls diagonally across bare skin on the back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bobbins are already clicking when you come down, and your mother has pinned the pattern to the table with two cold cups of tea. "Frost rosette," she says, tapping the largest sheet. "Forty pairs for the collar, and Anselm Roth wants it over the pass before the snow shuts the road at Kessel Gate." You sit, pull the lamp closer, and let your fingers find the cross-hatch the way they always do, quick and small, a net so fine it could catch a moth but not a breath.

By noon the stems are curling outward like bindweed up a wall, and the heart you saved for last sits at the centre of the design where the threads gather. Your mother wanted a plain edge. You gave her a heart anyway, worked into the scrollwork where nobody would look unless they were looking for it. Roth arrives with wind in his coat and snow on his hat brim, stamps his boots on the step, and says the valley lady will pay in silver if the collar sits exactly at her neck. He doesn't ask whose heart it is. He never asks.

That night the pass goes white. You hear the mules complaining in the yard and the crack of ice on the shutters, and you go to the window with the finished collar folded in tissue. Far down the switchbacks a single lantern is moving, slowly, toward the gate. You picture the lace laid across the valley lady's shoulders, the rosette at her throat, all those tiny nets holding nothing but air. By morning the lantern will have crossed the summit, and she will lift the collar to her neck and feel, against her skin, the one thing you stitched there for no one's commission.
