Dotwork mandala flower on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala-style flower with layered, pointed petals sits on the outer forearm close to the elbow. The design combines fine outlines with stippled dotwork shading that gives the petals depth and a textured finish. The tattoo is in black and grey, centred on the arm against a soft grey background.

You reach the Sarrin pass an hour after the snow has decided to stay, and the hut keeper, Ilse Varga, hands you a tin cup before you have finished knocking the ice from your collar. Her fingers are stained blue from the indigo she boils down through the winter, and she is already looking past you down the road, counting the carts that have not come.

She shows you the flower she is making on the hut floor. Every autumn the drovers leave a stone on the cairn for each animal they lost crossing, and every spring she sets those stones into rings, layered outward like petals, then pricks each one with a nail dipped in soot so the dots catch the lamplight. It takes her a month. You watch her tap the nail in small, patient strokes, thousands of points of dark, and you understand that the pattern is less decoration than ledger.
Outside, the wind swings round and the lower valley opens for a moment, grey and bright. You ask whether the count is ever finished. She says the outermost petals always close on the same stone, but the centre stays open for whoever comes over the pass next, because a mandala is only true while someone is still walking towards it.
At dawn you leave with the cup still warm in your hand. Where the rail meets the snow, someone has tapped a single dark dot into the frost, and when you look back from the first bend, the hut's shutters are open and a small lamp is being carried to the centre of the floor.
