Fine line botanical sprigs on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a fine line tattoo of leafy sprigs, small flowers and thin branches, arranged in a loose cluster on the inner wrist and forearm. The linework is thin and even with little shading, and the plant stems curve outward from the centre of the design. The arm runs diagonally across a pale background, with soft shadow falling across the lower right of the frame.

Dear Hetty, Mr Pryor has finally let me take cuttings from the walled garden at Harrowgate Keep, though only because he thinks the honeysuckle is dying and wants it cleared before the autumn fair. I have pressed what I could between the pages of your old atlas, the one with the broken spine, so mind how you open it.

The walls still stand on three sides, but the north range came down in the hard winter of '71 and took the still-room with it. Nettles grow where the kitchen used to be. Yet along the foot of the chapel wall a wild sprig has spread out in a loose fan, thin stems arching away from a single root as if reaching for a window that is no longer there. Its flowers are smaller than a fingernail, and the leaves are so pale that the light comes through them.
I cut three stems with the good scissors and wrapped them in wet muslin. On the cart back to the station one snapped, and I thought of the footbridge over the Tyne and how the river carries off whatever is let go. The other two survived the journey, and the carter said he had never known a plant to be so stubborn about being moved.
Enclosed is the best of them for you. Press it flat rather than folded, and keep it out of the afternoon sun. When the frost comes, stand at the window and count the branches. If you find one missing, I have kept it for myself, as I always do. Your loving sister, Clara.
