Dotwork mandala on the forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular mandala sits on the arm, with a dense, dotted flower head at the centre surrounded by a ring of stylised lotus-like petals and curling scrolls. The shading is built from stippled dots that gradually thicken toward the centre, with fine black outlines defining the outer motifs. The image is black and white, with a soft blurred street background that keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Dess had been stippling the same rosette onto the carousel's centre panel since the fair left Margate, and each night the dots came out a little finer than the night before. Her father said a rosette was a rosette. He had painted fairground horses for thirty years with a brush and a bottle of enamel, and he did not hold with stippling, which he called fiddly and slow. Dess held with it anyway. Each dot was a small decision, and she liked making them one at a time while the generator hummed and the wheel turned slowly overhead.

The ring was the difficult part. Lotus petals, she had decided, because the old Dutch wheel had them carved under its canopy, and scrolls curling outward like the ends of a ribbon someone had tugged. She drew each one freehand on the wooden boards with a compass pin and a stick of chalk, and by the third week the outer ring looked like a clock that had forgotten how to tell the time. Her father walked past it every morning with his tea and said nothing, which she took as approval.
On the last night before the fair moved on to Ramsgate, the wheel stopped halfway through a turn with a jolt that threw the lamps across the field. Dess climbed up to check the bearings and found her father sitting on the centre hub, looking up at the rosette. He had his reading glasses on. Without speaking he reached into his jacket and pulled out a tin of gold leaf he had been saving since before she was born.
He pressed a single flake into the middle dot. It caught the lamplight, and the whole wheel seemed to hold its breath.
