Sunflowers and peony on a shoulder and upper arm
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two large sunflowers, a full peony and smaller flowers with leaves, arranged in a dense cluster that wraps over the shoulder and down the upper arm. The design is built from black outline work with grey shading on the petals and centres, giving depth without solid fills. The photograph is black and white and frames the arm against a blurred background, with the subject's face out of frame.

The rain has found its way under the awning again, and you are the one lifting the buckets of peonies off the wet boards before they drown. Along the row, Mrs Okafor calls that the sunflowers are sulking, bent over their stems like children sent to stand in the corner, and you tell her it is only the weather, not the flowers. Nobody buys on a Saturday like this. The gulls have given up and gone to sit on the bins.

Then Mr Haddow comes splashing up the lane with his collar turned up, a sheet of paper in a plastic sleeve held against his chest like a letter he has been asked to deliver. He does not want bouquets. He unfolds the sleeve on your trestle and taps it with one finger. Two sunflowers, a full peony, the smaller flowers tucked in beside them with their leaves. Drawn in black ink, the petals shaded grey, so the whole cluster looks like it has been left out in the dusk. 'It was my mother's wall,' he says. 'Every August it got so thick you couldn't see the brick. I want it inked the way it grew over that fence.'
You look at the drawing a long time, longer than he is comfortable with. Then you find a seed packet in your apron pocket, the old kind with a faded sunflower on the front, and press it into his palm. 'Plant these in March,' you say. 'Give them something to lean on.' He laughs, the first laugh of the morning, and the rain stops as if it had only been waiting for him to say it.
