Dotwork moth above geometric lines on back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large moth with spread wings and feathery antennae is tattooed across the upper back. Its wings and body are shaded with stippled dots and fine hatching, giving a soft, textured grey. Beneath it, bold black lines form interlocking triangles and a central vertical axis, with fine intersecting lines and dotted circles creating a symmetrical geometric pattern.

The moth had found the lamp before the snow closed the north road, and by the time Tobias Veer carried the last keg up from the cellar it had walked the length of the taproom beam three times, as if reading it. Bett watched it from the settle with her knitting in her lap. 'Moths in the snow are never just moths,' she said, not looking up. 'They come for the ones still out on the pass.'

Tobias said nothing. He had heard it every winter since they were wed, and every winter he had taken down the knotted cord and measured the flagstones to humour her. She knelt now with a lump of chalk, drawing a square, then lines from its corners to a point above the hearth, then a ring around the lamp, the way her mother had shown her. The moth came down to rest on the wall beside the chalk and opened its wings slowly, grey as ash, the edges scalloped like lace.
The knock came after midnight, a drover with ice in his beard and a dog that would not leave the step. Hal Ansty, he said, bound for the market at Carrick Fold, had lost his mule in the white and walked the last mile on his own feet. Bett fed him broth and did not ask him to take off his coat. He slept by the fire with the dog across his boots. When Tobias woke at first light the drover had gone, the dog with him, and the yard lay unbroken under the snow except for one line of prints running straight to the chalk square and stopping there.
The moth was gone from the beam. Inside the chalk ring lay a single silver penny and a folded scrap in Hal's blunt hand: The lines held. Keep the lamp lit. Bett rubbed the square out with her apron, leaving the lamp burning, and the inn did not lose another traveller on the pass.
