Owl with spread wings and skull on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large back piece showing a front-facing owl with spread wings and talons gripping a branch at the base. A skull sits above the owl, with radiating light rays behind the bird and feathered wing detail extending to both shoulders. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong contrast between the dark background and the pale highlights on the feathers and rays.

Dear Mags, the rain came in sideways again last night, and the owl was back on the iron gantry above Stall Nine, the same as every Tuesday since the roof went. I counted the wings before the lamps were lit: twenty-two strokes of pale light across the gutter, no more, no less. The skull sits up there too, bone-white in the drizzle, and nobody on the market will say whose it was.

Old Mr Okonedo swears it came from the fish auction years back, wrapped in oilcloth inside a tackle box, and that the owl came with it the way a dog comes with a cottage. He says the bird only drops down to the eel crates when someone is about to lie about the weights. I laughed at him until Thursday, when I watched it lower itself onto the rail above the scales, claws opening and closing on the wet wood like it was feeling for a pulse.
Last night I finally asked it what it wanted. It turned its head all the way round, the way they do, and looked at the ledger in my hands, the one with the doubled columns I had been keeping for Harrow's men. I did not decide to put it in the gutter. My fingers simply opened. The rain took the ink before dawn and left the paper grey as the sky.
Come up to the gantry when you can. The light is better from there, and the owl has started saving you a seat.
