Dotwork rose on a shoulder

Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A full rose bloom with layered petals and several leaves on the outer edges is tattooed on the top of the shoulder. The shading is built from fine stippled dots, with darker outlines defining the petals and leaves. The design is in black and grey, centred on the shoulder against a pale, plain background.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and a story is thirsty work, so pour me the second cup while I tell it. Ilyas of Sidon did not paint with brushes. He pricked his roses into plaster with a bone point dipped in soot, one dot at a time, because his grandmother had told him that a thing made of small touches outlasts a thing made in a single stroke.

The rose-seller's daughter came to him in the month of the grape harvest with a request nobody else would take. She wanted a bloom the size of a fist pressed onto the lintel of the house where her mother had died, and she wanted it finished before the rains. Ilyas asked her how many dots a rose needed. She laughed and said as many as there are days left to grieve, then sat down on the step and counted with him, stone by stone, until the sun slipped behind the eastern wall.

He worked through autumn. The petals took him longest, layer over layer, each outer edge darkened so the bloom seemed to lean out into the lane. The leaves he kept sharp and few. Neighbours walked past and said the thing looked like grey smoke, not a flower. Ilyas said nothing, because smoke seen from far off is only dots seen from close up, and nobody passing in the road ever looks that closely.

When the rains came the girl stood in the lane and squinted. She said it looked dead. Ilyas handed her a lamp and told her to walk up to the wall and breathe on it. Close to, every dot was a small black seed of attention. Stepping back, the whole rose opened in the grey light like something that had decided, after all, to bloom. She stood there until the lamp burned out, and then she left it on the step for him.
