Three black and grey roses on a shoulder blade

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person seen from behind shows a black and grey tattoo of three roses with leaves on the upper back, close to the shoulder blade. The largest rose sits lower and the two smaller blooms rise above it, all drawn with bold outlines and soft grey shading on the petals. The pale skin and dark wood background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The roses came up the lane in the back of Mrs Haverly's cart every June, wrapped in wet sacking, and Tom Pell was always the one sent down to the gate to carry them in. That summer the bushes along the wall had gone wild with bloom, three and four heads to a stem, and his mother said the blooms wouldn't last the week if nobody cut them. So he cut them, and the thorns opened the backs of his hands, and he did not mind.

The Haverly girl, Eliza, was sixteen and sharp about everything except the flowers. She stood at the sink with her sleeves pushed up and sorted them by colour, the pale ones in one bucket, the deep red in another. The big blowsy one at the bottom of the lot she called a cabbage, and laughed when he defended it, saying a rose that heavy deserved a little respect. She took the largest head from the bucket, tucked it behind her ear and said she would wear it to chapel on Sunday whether anybody liked it or not.

She did not come to chapel on Sunday. The cart came back the following week with the sacks folded and no one on the seat beside Mr Haverly, who did not look at the boy when he took the reins. Tom went to the wall that evening with his knife. The roses there had already gone brown at the edges, curling inward like letters somebody had started and given up on. He cut one anyway, the biggest, and carried it home inside his coat, where it kept its shape a while longer than anything else he owned.
