Black and grey traditional tattoos on a bare torso: a dove over a heart with a banner on the chest, and a rose with a ribbon banner on the stomach.

Dove and heart chest tattoo with rose on stomach

Traditional · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A bare torso with an open denim jacket shows a dove holding a heart on the upper chest, with a banner above and the words TRUE LOVE below. A second design, a rose with a ribbon banner, sits lower on the stomach near the navel. The work uses bold outlines and grey shading on a light background, with no colour ink.

The bird comes down on the rail at four bells, so worn out that its feathers are grey with soot, and you are the only one on deck to see it. Someone has tied a strip of oilcloth to its leg with a knot you recognise as the bosun's. You work it loose with cold fingers and unroll the scrap: two lines in pencil, a heart drawn underneath, and the name NELL pressed so hard the paper has torn at the edge.

You know Nell from the dockside at Bristol, where she sold pies from a barrow and laughed at the way you said *water*. You promised her a ring at the next port, and then the Atlantic had other plans. The dove sits on your wrist while you read the note again, its heart beating fast under the feathers, quick as a knuckle tapping on a hatch.

By morning the bird has eaten crumbs from your palm and the wind has backed round to the north. Mick from the galley, who swears by every sailor's charm ever inked, says the creature must be carrying an answer, and that a man who ignores a sign deserves whatever the sea gives him. You tell him to mind the stove and go back to counting the water casks.

That evening you write back on the same scrap. It is not a promise, only the plain truth: the ship turns for home at the Azores, and the ring will have to wait for the shop window. You tie the paper to the bird's leg and open your hand. It rises, circles the mainmast once, and heads east into the last of the light, toward a coast you have not yet seen.
