Moth and script tattoos on a hand

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a hand turned palm up, showing a moth tattoo across the palm and the base of the thumb. Lettering reads DANDY on the wrist, with a small cross and partial script above and below it. The linework appears fine with grey shading, and a metal watch strap sits on the wrist against a dark wooden background.

The moth came through the chapel door just as the bride reached the second hymn, and it settled on the brass lamp above the altar as though it had been sent for. Mrs Pargeter, who had rung the bell for forty years, said it was a bad sign. Her husband said it was only a moth, and nobody had ever thought to ask a moth its business.

Everyone in Saltmarsh knew the story of the cousin, Dandy Rook, who had gone to sea at sixteen with a cross pinned inside his collar and had never written home. He came back the summer before, thinner and browner, with his name run in ink along the inside of his wrist and a grey moth spread across his palm. He showed the palm to nobody but the bride's mother, who went quiet and then put the kettle on twice.

The vicar lifted the ring from the cushion, and the cushion was not empty. The moth had walked onto it, folding and unfolding its wings as slowly as a man reading a letter. Nobody breathed. The groom, who had not looked up once during the vows, held out his open hand, the way you would to a dog you did not yet trust.

The moth crossed onto his palm and stayed there. Tom closed his fingers gently, then opened them again at the door, and the moth lifted into the light over the sea. "Well," said Mrs Pargeter, "that's him settled, then."
