Dragon and floral tattoos on torso and arm

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a torso cropped below the chin, wearing a white crop top and studded black leather trousers and gloves. A black and grey dragon or serpent-like creature with shaded detail sits on the side of the stomach and ribs, and floral tattoos appear on the chest, shoulder and upper arm. The background is a pale wall beside a window, and the lighting is soft and even.

Mind the third step, it's loose, and don't touch the roses till I've finished, because they are not yours to touch. Sit down by the sundial. That's where the dragon sleeps, under the flagstones, and if you're quiet you can hear it snoring like a kettle.

It came over the wall the winter the old Marchbank lord died, when the whole valley was white and the rooks had stopped talking. Nobody saw it come. They only saw the frost lift off the walls in a single ring, and in the morning the rose by the gate had opened in January, red as a cut. The dragon was grey as wet slate and as long as a cart, and it was starving, because the land had nothing left in it for a creature like that to eat.

So Dorothy Pell, who kept the glasshouse and had buried two husbands and a goat, went out with a pail of skimmed milk and a spade. She didn't ask it what it wanted. She asked it what it could mend. The dragon thought about this for a week, then began to coil itself along the cracks in the wall, pressing its scales into the mortar until the stones stopped weeping damp. It ate the greenfly, the black spot, the cutworm. It drank the rain off the leaves and breathed the frost back out over the hill.

Dorothy died in the spring of 1962 with her hands still in the soil. The dragon curled down under the sundial and has stayed there since. Every winter the garden grows one rose in the dark, and that is its payment, for it is a courteous beast.

Now, which of these roses would you like me to cut for you?
