Draped chain tattoo across fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of the back of a hand with fine chains of small beads hanging in loose swags across the middle and ring fingers, ending in teardrop pendants. The linework is delicate and precise, with the beads shaded in small dots and dark accents. The soft, neutral background is blurred, and the close framing centres the tattoo across the knuckles.

He took the ledger down and found the entry in his father's hand. Pledged by Hannah Cole, twelve shillings, redeemable within the year. Beneath it, in ink gone the colour of weak tea, his father had written a single word, and Mr Tolley sat for a long time with the glass in one hand and the necklace in the other, deciding whether that word was an instruction or a kindness.
