Compass rose and anchor on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey compass rose sits on the shoulder, with dotwork stippling shading the points of the star and a fine decorative pattern behind it. A thin single line curves from the compass down to a small anchor with a loop at its top, and the compass letters N and E are marked in the points. The photograph is taken at a close angle in soft, even light against a plain grey background.

No, sit closer, the lamp only lasts until the third bell, and I have not got the breath to shout over the pumps. You want to know how the Marigold Rest kept her course when the charts went blank? Because Ondine Vell carried a compass in her coat, and it was the one thing aboard that did not care what the ship thought of itself.

Every point of that star had been pricked by hand, a thousand dots to a ray, so the old light would catch and scatter across the brass. Ondine learned the sky from dead men's logs. When the sensors failed in the ninth year, she laid the rose flat on the chart table and read our heading off its points: N for the north ring, E for the engine hum that would fade toward the Sunward Arm. The crew thought she was mad. The crew were mostly sleeping in the dark by then.
From the rose she ran a single thread of cord through the hull grid, one knot for every day we had drifted without a fix. The deckhands called it the tether, and they bet on how many knots it would hold. When at last we dropped the anchor in the dust of Carrow Reach, it did not bite stone. It snagged on the tail of a dead comet, and the whole ship swung like a bell.
The children laughed at that, the way you are laughing now. Ondine did not laugh. She tied the last knot, wound the cord twice around her wrist, and said a star is only a place you agree to keep steering toward. Then the lamp went out, and we steered by her voice until morning.
