The silversmith's cabinet is finally empty, except for the piece Mr Abernathy ordered in March and never came back for. You'll remember him, the ship chandler with the cough. He wanted a draped chain, fine as spider silk, with drops like falling rain and a central pendant shaped like a lantern. I spent three weeks on the links alone. Every evening I locked the shop, laid the chain across the bench under the lamp, and counted the little diamonds until my eyes ached.

Yesterday his widow came in off the quay with rain dripping from her hat brim. She didn't want the chain sold, she said.
