Arrow and compass tattoo down the spine
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical black tattoo runs down the centre of the back, showing an arrow with feathered fletching at the top and an arrowhead at the bottom. A circular compass rose with an eight-point star sits at the middle of the design, connected by the arrow shaft. The ink is solid black with clean, even linework on smooth skin, set against a plain light background.

The compass on the wheelhouse bulkhead has been sticking since Tuesday, and you are the one who has to tap it every time the boat swings into the swell. Skipper Mair says it's the magnets, but you know it's the cold. Half the fleet is out past the Gannet Bank with their nets down, and the Cora Ann is last through the gap, her lamp the only thing you can see when the fog rolls in.

Dessa, the youngest on the boat, hands you the flat tin of arrows she has been whittling from ash offcuts. Each one has a fletching of gull feathers bound with waxed thread, a trick her grandfather taught her on the quay at Porthkerran. 'Mark the shoal and it'll stay put,' she says, and you think she's joking until she drives the first arrow into the bulkhead beside the compass, true as a plumb line.
Forty miles out, the fog lifts for four minutes. Long enough to see the church spire, the two red marks on the breakwater, and the buoy whose light hasn't worked in a year. Mair turns the wheel without a word. You take the compass off its bracket, hold the needle steady against your palm until it settles north, and sight along the arrow shaft the way Dessa showed you. The line runs straight to the harbour mouth.
When the nets come up heavy at dusk, nobody mentions the stuck compass. Dessa tucks the spare arrowhead into your coat pocket. 'Keep that one,' she says. 'You'll be the one who finds us next time.'
