Dreamcatcher mandala design with feathers
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing on paper of a dreamcatcher built around a central mandala of radiating petals and geometric star shapes, with a ring of lace-like scrollwork around it. Three long feathers and a fan of wispy plumes hang below, strung with small beads and a diamond-shaped pendant. The fine, even linework is mostly solid black with some dotted shading in the mandala, and a black fineliner pen rests on the page at the left.

Agnes came down the garden path with the sieve still in her hands, because her mother had said it must be back in the scullery before the light went, and the light was already going behind the medlar. An old man sat on the bench beneath it with a hoop across his knees. It was a flower of knotted thread, petals opening out from a star at the centre, and round its rim ran rings of looped lace. Three long feathers and a fan of soft plumes hung from the bottom, strung with little beads.

'What's it for?' she asked. 'Catching what comes in at night,' he said, not looking up from the knot he was tying. 'Bad dreams, mostly. The good ones go through the middle, down the feathers, and find their way home to whoever sent them.' She sat beside him and watched his fingers work. 'Did you make it for someone?' 'My wife. She dreamed of cold rivers every night one winter, and I wanted the river kept out of her bed.' He pulled the last knot tight and put it in her lap. 'Take it up to the house. Nobody has hung it yet.'
Her mother said the bench had been empty for nine years, and that the rose walk had been stripped of its roses the autumn his wife was buried. Agnes said nothing about the net. That night she hung it over her bed, and lay listening to the feathers tick against the window frame like a clock that had forgotten the hour.
In the morning the medlar had dropped its fruit in a ring round the bench, and frost lay on the lace of the hoop in the exact shape of a flower. Her mother came out with the sieve and stopped at the gate. 'Well,' she said quietly, 'something has been kept.'
