Black ink mandala being drawn by hand
Black and grey · Flash
A hand holds a black fineliner pen and draws a symmetrical mandala on white paper. The design has radiating petals, scrolls, dots and layered rings, all built from fine black linework. The image is shown in black ink on white with the drawing partly complete, and the composition centres the mandala in the frame.

Tuesday, 4.10 a.m. The proving cabinet hums and the flour on my wrists has gone grey in the creases. Mrs Okonedo's order is pegged to the hook by the door: forty split tins for the Hendry Street café, and a ring of rolls she wants shaped like a crown for her grandson's christening. I have ten minutes before the first batch goes in, so I am doing what Dad did in the margins of his ledgers, which is drawing.

I started with a dot in the middle of the page, the way he taught me, then a ring of eight petals, then another ring that refused to sit still. By now the centre is dense and the outer edge is still loose, a scatter of scrolls I keep meaning to close. Every line has to be decided once, with a fineliner that does not forgive a wobble. Dough is kinder. You can knock it back and start again.
Something about the symmetry steadies me. Turn the paper a fraction and every petal answers the one opposite it. Dad used to say a loaf scored true will bloom in the oven without you having to help it, and I have never known whether he meant bread or me.
The oven timer goes off as the last scroll closes. I shake out the tins, slide them in, and leave the paper on the proofing shelf where the warmth gets under it. By six the drawing will have curled at the corners and gone a little brown at the edges, like something that has been somewhere. I'll add the last ring tomorrow.
