Dreamcatcher tattoo on a hip

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a close crop of a bare midriff and hip wearing black bikini bottoms, with a navel piercing and a dangling charm above. A black dreamcatcher tattoo with a circular hoop, a fringe of trailing beads and three feathers sits on the right side of the hip. The linework is thin and dark, with little or no shading, and the tattoo is the only colour-neutral element against the warm skin tones.

The hoop had worked loose again in the night wind, so Nell sat on the cold step of the chapel and rewove it from green willow cut below the moat. Gulls argued over the keep. She bound each join with waxed thread, then strung the beads her grandmother had dug out of the nave floor, pale glass worn smooth as sea pebbles.

Nobody had lived in Scarhollow Castle for three centuries. Walkers came up the hill for the view and stopped under the arch to photograph themselves, but they never stayed past dusk, and the village kept its children indoors after the bell. Her grandmother had said the ruin gathered dreams the way a rock pool gathered crabs, and that a hoop hung in the window would catch whatever wandered in. Nell tied three feathers to the bottom: a jackdaw's, a wood pigeon's, and a heron's grey plume that had come down on the path one February.

Alfie Brind, the surveyor's son, came up on a dare the week the wind dropped. He slept under the arch with a torch and woke crying, and Nell heard him from the cottage. She found him curled against the stone with his fists clenched, and the hoop above him was trembling, its beads ticking together as if something were caught in the mesh. Something was. A black, shapeless wave rising over the harbour wall, the sort of dream that clings to a boy for weeks.

She lifted the net from the window at first light and carried it to the cliff edge. Nell unpicked the knot and let the dream go out over the water, where the tide could break it up. Behind her Alfie was already laughing with his friend at the gate. By noon the hoop was empty, and the only thing left in it was the heron plume, still warm from the sun.
