Black tribal swirl on the lower abdomen
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black tribal-style design of curling scrolls and tapering strokes sits on the side of the lower abdomen, above the waistband of dark trousers. The linework is bold and mostly solid black, with soft grey shading and a faint pink tone around the skin. The composition is cropped to the torso, with a grey zipped hoodie and white lace top at the edges and a navel piercing above the tattoo.

Thursday, 14 May 1953. Mr Abbott came in for his kite again, the blue one with a tail of old stockings, and asked why I still bother with paper when the wind has blown the same way since Easter. I told him the wind does not know what it is doing, it only knows which way is down. He laughed and bought a reel of linen line instead.

The big gust came through at half past four, off the marsh, the way it does before rain. I was on the sea wall with the Harrop girls, trying to get the frame of the box kite to sit true, when the air turned round us in a long curl. It lifted the sand off the shingle in ribbons that thinned out to nothing over the reeds. It lasted perhaps a minute. Then it simply stopped, and the gulls dropped back onto the mud as if someone had called them.
Ruth wanted to know where it had gone. I said it had gone up the church tower to the weathercock, and that the vicar would be furious about the feathers in his gutters. She did not believe me, so we sat on the wall and watched the reeds bend and straighten, bend and straighten, until the tide turned.
I have pinned the kite's spine to the wall above the bench, next to the sketch I made that afternoon: three long strokes tapering to a point, and two scrolls where the air doubled back on itself. Tomorrow I will cut the sail from the blue cloth. If the wind comes again, I shall let the string run out and see where it wants to take it.
