Dreamcatcher with feathers and beads sketch

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a dreamcatcher with a woven web of thin lines and small round beads, hung from a twig with a feather. Three feathers and beaded cords hang from the lower edge of the hoop, with a smaller feather and beads at the top right. The work uses soft grey graphite shading with fine hatching, and the image is entirely greyscale with two pencils resting on the page.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Quennell had kept the boarding house at the end of Gull Row for thirty-one winters, and in all that time nobody had asked her what she dreamed. Her lodger Thomas Pyle asked on the Tuesday, a pencil behind his ear and the sea smashing grey against the railings outside. He was drawing a hoop on the back of a seed packet, he said, and could she sit still for a minute.

She did not sit still. She dusted the mantel instead, and the clock, and the little brass horse that belonged to nobody. But she watched him over her shoulder as he worked, the way he drew the web: a ring, then spokes like the lines of a cartwheel, then knots of tiny beads where the threads crossed. He said his grandmother had hung one above her bed in a town with no sea at all, and that the web was for catching whatever came in at night, letting the bad ones slip through the holes.

"And the feathers?" Ada said.

"For the weight. So it hangs true."

That got her. Forty years of guests, and not one had ever made a thing so the wind could not push it over. When he was done she took the packet from him and found the pencil had pressed so hard into the paper that the beads stood up like pearls under her thumb.

She pinned it by the stairs. Every night after that, going up with the candle, she touched the feathers as she passed, and slept without once dreaming of the cellar door.
