Pocket watch and rose design sketch
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of an open pocket watch with Roman numerals, a second hand and a chain-like fob, partly covered by a rose and several leaves. The linework is dark and confident, with soft grey shading on the watch case, lid and petals to give volume. The image is shot straight on, with the drawing filling most of the frame and a pencil visible at the top edge.

The snow had sealed the pass for three days, and Ada Pring had run out of patience before she ran out of coal. Her guests were the kind who came in from the weather and stayed to argue about it. Only Tobias Wray sat quiet by the range, turning his father's pocket watch over in his palm as if it might tell him something he had not asked.

"Six minutes fast," he said when she asked. "He set it that way so he'd never miss the carrier's cart. Never once arrived early, mind. Said a man ought to have something to be sorry for." He flicked the lid open. The hands stood just short of the twelve, and the numerals had worn pale where a thumb had rubbed them for forty years.
Overnight the wind dropped, but the kitchen clock ticked on regardless. At five Ada found Tobias awake, the watch lying open on the table with its face turned toward the window, where the first grey light was coming over the fell. He had not wound it. The hands had crept up to the hour and stopped there.
She picked it up, shook it once, and set it running by the clock on the wall. Then, because the road would open by noon and the carrier would be waiting at the bottom of the hill, she wound it six minutes forward and pressed it back into his hand. "Early," she said. He almost smiled.
