Eagle and Harley-Davidson logo

Realism · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed eagle head in profile sits above the Harley-Davidson bar and shield logo, with the words Motor Cycles and Harley-Davidson lettered across the banner. The eagle's feathers, eye and beak are shaded with smooth grey gradients and highlights to give a three-dimensional, almost photographic effect. The design fills the frame against plain skin with no colour ink.

Ray had copied the eagle off a leather jacket he bought at a car boot sale in Chatham, and he said it would keep the stairwell honest. Nobody on the ninth floor believed him, but when the council sent lads round with grey paint to cover the tags, Ray stood at the bottom of the stairs with a tin of his own and a brush gone stiff from the garage.

He worked on the landing wall for three weekends. The bird came first, its head turned sideways to watch the car park, the eye picked out in white so it looked wet. Then the shield under it, a bar across the middle with the words lettered along the banner, and a curl of ribbon beneath that nobody could read from the lift. I held the torch for him. He told me the grey had to go on in thin coats, light into dark, or the feathers would look as flat as a bin lid.

By the time the paint dried, the eagle had become the thing people gave directions by. Left at the bird, the post lady would say. Kids sat on the step beneath it eating chips out of the paper. Ray never rode a machine again after his knee went, but most evenings he'd lean on the walkway rail and look down past the bird's beak to the road where the bikes came through on Sundays, loud enough to rattle the bins. He never once looked at the lettering. He said the eagle knew where it was.
