Owl tattoo on an arm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large owl sits upright and faces the viewer, with a bold outline, layered shaded feathers across the chest and a smooth tapered wing shape. The eyes contain circle and triangle motifs, and a branch or perch crosses beneath the body. The piece is rendered entirely in black ink and grey tones, with soft gradients and solid dark areas.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The baker's wife had the ovens lit before the church clock struck three, and the flour was still in its sacks when the owl came down the flue. It landed on the rim of the proving trough with a soft scrape, grey as wet ash, and settled there as if it had paid for the seat. Old Tobias crossed himself with a floury hand and said that an owl at the bread meant somebody in the parish would not see Michaelmas. His wife said owls came where the bread was warm and the crusts were thrown out, and that she would not be frightened of a bird with the manners to sit still.

The owl did sit still. Its eyes were round as cartwheels, each ringed twice and pricked with a small sharp triangle, and it watched their hands work the dough without blinking once. When the first batch went into the oven it shifted along the beam and spoke in a voice like a drawer being slowly opened. Ask me a question, it said, and I will give you one true answer for one warm loaf. Tobias wanted to know about the mill prices. His wife wanted to know whether their son would come home from the coast. The owl answered neither. It said the oven on the left would crack by Lent unless someone fixed the flue, and that the dough would rise best if it was kept under a wet cloth until the window turned pearl.
By the time the window was pearl, the trough was empty and the owl had eaten four heels of bread. It lifted off without a sound, leaving one soft feather on the flour. The wife baked it into the last loaf out of habit, and it came out golden with a line of ash through the crumb. Her son walked in at noon, ready to be scolded, and asked what smelled so good.
