Eagle, globe and anchor tattoo

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black tattoo of an eagle with spread wings perched above a globe, with a rope-wrapped anchor curving around the lower left and right sides. The globe is shown in solid black with the continents left as bare skin, and the rope and feather details are rendered with clean, flat black ink. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark background.

The gull had been fighting the mooring line for ten minutes before Maud Penrose noticed the bird on the rail was no gull. It was far too big for the bollards, its head turned towards the water as though the Skerry Sound owed it money. She set down the coil of rope and let the wind take her cap across the quay.

Her father had kept the harbour chart room for thirty-one years, and the brass globe on its stand had outlasted him. Nobody dusted it except Maud. The continents on it were worn to bare metal from decades of thumbs, and the anchor rope bound round its base had gone grey and stiff with salt. She had never once thought of it as a thing that could be left.

When she climbed the iron stairs that afternoon, the bird was perched on the globe's brass meridian, wings half open, talons hooked over the Atlantic as if it meant to lift the whole sea. It looked at her the way her father used to look at a late tide table. She didn't shout. She unwound the rope from the stand, slowly, the way you'd free a dog from a fence, and tied a bowline in the free end.

The bird took the loose end in its beak, and for a moment the chart room smelt of tar and oranges. Then it rose through the skylight with the rope trailing behind, and Maud went down to the window in time to see it turn north over the lighthouse. On the chart table, beneath the pencil marks of her father's last survey, she drew a small ring where the bird had sat and left the rest of the paper as blank as the sea.
