Eagle head and star on the back of a hand

Neo-trad · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A bold eagle head in profile sits at the centre of the back of a hand, with grey feathers, a yellow beak and a brown eye, shaded in black and grey. It is set against a layered star-shaped geometric background in red, orange and teal, with fine line detail in the points. A floral tattoo with red and peach blooms is partly visible at the top of the frame, continuing onto the wrist.

Dear Tomas,

The ovens were lit at half three, same as always, and I thought of you when the first tray came out, the way you used to stand on the flour sacks to watch me pull the bread. Mrs Okafor's order is ready in the crate by the back door. Four cobs, two plaits, and the big rye she wanted for the funeral tea, though she has not asked for it since. I have written her name on the paper slip so Dev does not muddle it.

The old eagle is still up over the proving cupboard. You will remember Dad had the sign-writer put it there the year we took the shop, a bird in profile sitting on a star of coloured tiles he chose himself. Last week the damp got under the paint and the grey went patchy at the edges, so I have been looking at it each morning while the kettle heats. It has not looked like a bird that wants to leave. It looks like it is waiting to be told it can.

Dev reckons we should sell up and take the lease on the place by the station. I said I would think about it, which you know means no. But I wanted you to know I have not been sitting still. I fixed the hinge on the cellar door and found Mum's recipe book with your handwriting in the margins, the bit about a spoon of honey when the weather turns.

The sky is going pale over the car park now, and the star in the window is fading into the glass. Come home when you can. I am not keeping your share of the till any more, so you will have to argue with Dev for it.

Love, Nell
