Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
An eagle with spread wings grips a large key in its talons, with a red circle behind it. The linework is bold and dark, with black and grey feather shading and orange and red highlights on the wing edges and claws. Colour is concentrated around the bird and the red backdrop, and the eagle is shown at a diagonal across the forearm, with partial tattoos visible at the edges of the frame.

The snow had shut the pass for nine days when Maud at the Hollin Gap inn found the cellar door standing open and the great iron key gone from its nail. Her husband blamed the travellers. The travellers blamed the wind. Only the old ostler, who had fed the horses since before the roof was thatched, said nothing, because he had seen the eagle sitting on the byre beam the evening before, watching the kitchen with one yellow eye.

On the third morning the eagle came back. It settled on the snowbank outside the door with the key clamped in its talons, the wards bright as a new coin, and it would not let go when Maud reached for it. It only shook its wings, and the red light of the winter sunrise pooled behind it like a dish of wine. Maud understood then that the key had not been stolen. It was owed. Forty years before, her own grandmother had promised the mountain a loaf for every traveller turned from the door, and had never once paid.
So Maud fetched the bread. She carried it out one loaf at a time, twelve in all, and laid them in the snow in a ring around the bird. The eagle dropped the key into the drift at her feet, opened its grey wings, and rose over the pass until it was a dark cross against the sun. Behind her the cellar door swung shut on its own.
By noon the road had cleared, and the first carter up from the valley stopped at the inn with his hat in his hands and asked whether the inn had any room. Maud gave him the key and told him to take the top bed, the one with the window that faced the mountain.
