Eagle head portrait on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an eagle head in right-facing profile, with a hooked beak, a detailed eye and feathers that fade into the neck and chest area. The linework is largely replaced by soft, layered shading that builds texture in the feathers and highlights the curve of the beak. The image is in black and grey, with the design filling the forearm against a dark background.

Dear Tom,

The eagle came back to the chimney stack again this morning, the same one that sat there in March with its back to the wind, and Mrs Pargeter swore it was looking in at the guests. I told her it was looking at the sea, which is what everything in Saltcombe does when it has nothing better to do.
The lodgers have talked of nothing else. Mr Ashdown in room four says it is a sea eagle, that they were gone from this coast a hundred years, and that its feathers go grey at the edges the way the water does before a squall. I watched it from the scullery window for the best part of an hour. It did not blink that I saw. It turned its head slowly, hooked beak first, as if it were reading the harbour wall line by line.
Yesterday the fishermen's boy brought up a waterlogged ledger from the shingle with your name inked inside the cover. I have dried it on the range and kept it under the mangle, because Mrs Pargeter reads every envelope that comes through the post, and I will not say more on paper than that. Come when the season ends. Bring the good boots.
When I went up to close the shutters this evening the chimney was bare, and there was one grey feather lying on the slates, silver at the tip, as if something had decided to leave a sign for whoever was still watching.
Yours, Nell
