Swan with spread wings on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large swan with its neck curved and wings partly open fills the forearm, with its red beak at the top of the design. The feathers are shaded in soft greys and whites with fine, layered detail, and blue wash suggests water at the base. The swan is centred on the arm against a plain, lightly lit background.

Now sit close, for the moat remembers what the wind forgets. Below the broken gatehouse of Harrowmere there was once a lake so still that the swans kept their own counsel on it, and the eldest of them was called Sorrel Neck, for her throat was the colour of a pale wet bank. She had a mate who went down to the reeds one autumn to fetch the lord's bread crumbs and never came back up the water.

The lord's daughter, Ysolde Pell, was nine that year and stubborn as a gatepost. She would not be told the bird was dead. Each dusk she walked the causeway with a loaf under her arm and called the name her father had given the cob, which was Lantern, because of the way he shone at night. Sorrel Neck watched her from the shallows and did not come in. Swans, you understand, are not fools about hands.
On the last evening of the frost, Ysolde slipped on the ice and went under beside the sluice gate. The steward was too drunk to stir and the bell rope had rotted through. It was the grey swan who came, lifting her wings wide over the black water the way a sail fills, and she held the child up on her back until the lamps came down the bank. Her feathers were iced to the quill and her neck was bent almost double, but she would not let go until the hands reached her.
When the thaw came, they found Lantern's ring washed into the reeds, and Sorrel Neck was gone to the far end of the lake. The child still walks the causeway, they say, and if you stand very still at the water's edge you will see a pale wing unfold from the mist, as if someone were shaking out a cloth to dry.
