Black geometric eight-pointed star tattoo with spiral and symbol motifs centred between the shoulder blades on a person's upper back.

Eight-pointed star tattoo on upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph from behind of a person with short hair, showing a black ink tattoo of an eight-pointed star centred between the shoulder blades. Each point holds a petal-shaped panel containing small stylised symbols, with spiral motifs filling the gaps around a central cross. The fine, even linework is set against pale skin in a warm, slightly vintage-toned photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the goat. The star I'm going to tell you about was never painted on a wall. A woman called Nasra Dhune drew it every dawn in the sand beside her cart, using the heel of her sandal, so the wind had time to take it before the heat came up. She sold dates and salt out of that cart, and it squeaked like a dying hinge the whole way.

The road ran eight ways out of Tawil Wells, and every way looked the same, which is the trouble with roads that have no hedges. Eight petals, Nasra said, for eight directions, and in the heart of each petal a small mark a traveller could read if he knew the language: a spiral for water, a hook for a bent wheel, a sun with its face turned away for the place not to stop. The men at the well laughed at her. Then one spring a sandstorm buried every track by noon, and the men who had laughed were the ones lost on the flat by dusk.

Nasra was not there to see it. She had gone the long way, following the four great lines that run north, south, east and west and never lie. Her spiral marks led three boys back to the wells by starlight, and they swore afterwards that the star had turned above them slowly, like a lamp being carried by someone who knew the way.

The boys still draw it. The youngest one keeps it on the back of his own hand in ink he makes from soot and goat fat. Ask him which road is which and he will point to the spiral, say water, and grin as though it were a joke only he had been told.
