Geometric diamond and arrow tattoo on upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical geometric design of stacked diamonds, nested outlines, short horizontal ticks and a downward arrow point, drawn in black ink. The linework is clean and mostly unshaded, with small solid areas in the diamond shapes. The tattoo is centred on the upper back below the neck, against smooth skin, with a dark strap crossing the shoulders and a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming off the canopies since dawn, and by noon the cobbles of Saltergate market ran like a river. Old Tobias Wren sold cloth from a trestle by the fish sheds, and he had lost four bolts of wool in a month. He asked Hester Dunn, who drew patterns for the dyers, to put a mark on his board that would keep the hands away.

Hester thought about it through the afternoon. She did not believe in charms, but she believed in shape. She drew a tall hexagon with a diamond nested inside it, then a smaller diamond inside that, then four short ticks across the waist like the rungs of a ladder, and at the foot a point that aimed straight down. "Nail it under the counter," she said, "and let the point do its work. Whatever follows the arrow ends up where you want it."

That evening a boy in a wet grey coat came sniffing round the trestle. He reached for a bolt with his eyes on the board, then saw the point and followed it down to a grate in the cobbles, where the water chuckled. Next morning Tobias found the four bolts stuffed in the drain, and the boy's cap beside them, sodden and ashamed.

Tobias never explained it to the other traders. He only said that Hester's drawing had good manners, that it knew where a thing ought to go. Each dry morning after, he traced the diamond onto fresh paper and laid it under the counter, pointing down at the stones, where the rain kept running off to the river.
