Elephant and geometric lines on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A dark elephant silhouette, shaded with fine stippled dots, sits at the centre of the design and is framed by thin geometric lines. Fine circles, a triangle and a vertical line extend above and below it, with a small circle at the base. The design is in black ink and grey tones against pale skin, set on the inner forearm.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the candle, because Brother Osric has never once in forty years let a wick go out without blaming a novice. Now. The abbey at Hollin Fell kept its moon in a book, and the man who kept the book was Brother Tobias, who measured the sky with a cord knotted every hand's breadth and a plumb weight he swore was older than the bell.

One autumn a carter came up the valley road with an elephant he could not sell. It was grey and lame in one foreleg, and it had been trained to carry a painted box for a fair that had gone bankrupt in Carlisle. The abbot would not have it in the yard, so it was put in the old tithe barn, and Tobias went down each night with his lantern to watch it stand in the straw, swaying, as if counting something.
On the night of the thin moon Tobias chalked a great ring on the barn floor, a span wider than the creature's stride, with a straight line running down from its top through the middle. He asked the carter to walk the beast along that line. The elephant stepped out, lifted its trunk to the open slats, and stopped exactly where the moon hung in the gap above the fell. Tobias set down his cord and said nothing at all for the length of a psalm.
By morning the chalk had rubbed to nothing under the boots of the lay brothers, and the elephant was gone with the carter, who had been paid in bread and a pair of good boots. Tobias never drew the circle again. But every new moon since, I have seen him stand at the barn door with his hand on the frame, as though he still meant to measure something that had already walked away.
