Fine-line circles and arrows on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine-line geometric tattoo of overlapping circles, a vertical line and small arrowheads, with dotted construction lines running across the design. The thin black linework is crisp against the pale skin, with no shading or colour. The design is centred on the arm against a dark background.

The arrows had stopped agreeing with the compass again, and Teodor Halls knelt in the wet grass at the crossing with the brass instrument balanced on his knee, cursing the iron fence posts that had been driven in by someone who never checked a bearing. Beyond the wire the hills rolled the same colour as they did on this side. That was the trouble with boundaries. They were drawn on paper by people who had never walked them.

He had been sent to fix the line between two valleys that had feuded over a single spring for three generations. The old survey sheet showed a circle around the spring, drawn with a pair of dividers and a steady hand, and a dotted line running due north to a stone cairn that was no longer there. Halls had spent a week finding the cairn under a ploughed field. Now he stood on its approximate position and watched a crow pick at something by the fence.
He sighted along the vertical line the old surveyor had scratched into the margin, past the smaller circle that marked the spring, and let the needle settle. The arrowhead pointed at a rowan with a split trunk. He walked to it. Under its roots, wrapped in oilcloth, was a tin holding a folded sheet: a second, corrected bearing, signed with initials he recognised from his own grandfather's notebooks.
He laid the two sheets side by side on the bonnet of the jeep. Both circles met at the same point, the spring, and the line they shared ran straight through the middle of the field. Somebody had known the true line all along and had hidden it where only a patient man would look. Halls folded the corrected sheet into his breast pocket, drove back to the customs hut, and told the officer the fence was in the wrong place.
