Elephant and mandala flowers on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A teal elephant with a yellow tusk and a small purple flower above its head fills the forearm, framed by paisley scrolls and layered mandala-style flowers in pink, purple and orange. The linework is bold and dark, with smooth colour shading on the elephant and a warm yellow-orange glow behind it. The design runs down the forearm against a black background, ending above a teal band at the wrist.

The hall smells of squash and floor polish, and someone has pinned the old class photographs to a board by the stage, everyone squinting into the same May sun. You find Priya before you find anyone else. She is standing by the urn, still wearing the same chunky silver ring, and she tells you without preamble that the mobile classroom is being knocked down next week.

That mural. Mr Galloway let the whole of Year Ten paint an elephant across the back wall while the head was off with his back, teal as a swimming pool, its ears a loose blur of mandalas in pink and orange. You were put in charge of the flowers because your lines were neat. Priya got the tusk, and insisted on yellow, because the library book had said ivory and she wasn't having anyone accuse them of anything.
You talk about the wall, about the paisley scrolls that refused to stay inside their borders, about the purple flower in the corner that Galloway pretended was an accident. Then Priya passes you a folded paper napkin with a sketch on it, the elephant drawn in biro, and a note in her unmistakable slope: Last one out, bring the brushes. Somebody has to save the wall before the skip does.
That night you stand in the empty classroom with a torch, and the paint is still there under the grime, the teal gone grey at the edges. Behind a bin, half hidden, is a small purple flower nobody ever signed. You crouch, run a thumb across its petals, and find you have forgotten nothing at all.
